In this article I will show you how to Configure the Backup and Restore Feature in Windows 7. In Windows XP we had Windows Backup, which worked great at the time, but Microsoft managed to include a much more “complete” backup solution with Windows 7.
Configure New Backup Schedule:
Click on START and COMPUTER.
Then Right-Click on your Local Drive (C:) or other drive or folder that you want to backup.
From the menu, Click on PROPERTIES and click on the TOOLS tab on top.
When the BACK UP AND RESTORE YOUR FILES window opens, click on SET UP BACKUP
Windows 7 will then display all the available drives that you can use as a destination for your backup. You can also browse to a network share by clicking on SAVE ON A NETWORK.
After you selected your backup destination, click NEXT.
A Window will appear with two options where you choose what you want to backup.
1. Let Windows Choose (Recommended)
(This is probably the safest option if you are not sure what to backup as Windows 7 will then backup all
necessary user files and also create a System Image.)
2. Let Me Choose
(Here you have more control over what gets backed up. You can manually select the folders and files that
you want to backup and you still got the option to include a System Image.)
I will go with the LET ME CHOOSE option to show you how it works.
After you clicked NEXT the window where you can select the Folders and Files that you want to backup will appear.
Remember to select “INCLUDE A SYSTEM IMAGE” if you wish to include it in your backup. Then click NEXT.
On the next window review your selections and click NEXT.
The next window will allow you to schedule your backup. You can choose how often you want Windows 7 to make a backup for you and at what time.
When you done with the scheduling, click .
You will then see a window with your configured backup set on. You can then choose to back up your selected folders and files right away by clicking on BACK UP NOW, or you can close the window and Windows 7 will then backup your folders and files on the scheduled date and time you have configured.
While your backup is running, you can click on VIEW DETAILS to see the progress of your backup.
Restore the files you backed up:
When you want to restore files from your backup, you can either double-click on the backup file in your destination folder or go to the BACKUP AND RESTORE CENTRE and select RESTORE MY FILES.
The next window will allow you to select the files and folders that you want to restore. Click NEXT when you are done selecting your restore files. The restore wizard will then ask you to select a manual restore destination or you can restore the files and folders to their original locations.
Then click on RESTORE and you restore will begin.
