Emails has become one of the main business communication tools these days. Because of the amount of the emails that we send and receive, our email database size keeps increasing. This means that your Exchange Server might run out of storage space sooner than later. In this article I will explain the two methods how to move Exchange 2010 Mailbox Database to another drive or partition.
Always try to move Exchange Database using Exchange Management Console first before you try moving the database manually. This is the safest and easiest.
Move Exchange Mailbox Database using Exchange Management Console:
Open Exchange Management Console and navigate to ORGANIZATION CONFIGURATION and MAILBOX in the console tree on the left.
Then in the DATABASE MANAGEMENT tab, select the database you would like to move.
In the Actions pane, click on MOVE DATABASE PATH
When the wizard opens make sure that the DATABASE NAME is the correct database that you want to move.
Under DATABASE PATHS, enter the new path where you want to move Exchange 2010 Mailbox Database to. Usually the Log Folder Path is the same as the Database File Path.
Click on MOVE and Exchange will start to move the Mailbox Database for you. Moving the database might take a long time depending on the size of your Mailbox Database, so be patient.
On the COMPLETION PAGE the status should show as COMPLETED. This means that the wizard has completed the task successfully. Then click on FINISH.
In the case where the status on the COMPLETION PAGE shows FAILED, you can go ahead and try to move Exchange 2010 Mailbox Database manually by following the steps below.
Move Exchange 2010 Mailbox Database manually:
Open Exchange Management Console and navigate to ORGANIZATION CONFIGURATION and MAILBOX in the console tree on the left. Then in the Actions pane click on DISMOUND DATABASE.
Then manually copy all the file in the Mailbox Database folder to the new location. You can create any folder in the new location e.g. D:\Exchange Database. The default location of the Exchange 2010 Mailbox Database is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 1234567890. You need to copy the whole “Mailbox Database 1234567890” folder.
Then change the Path location for .edb, Logs and .chk file path by using ADSIEdit.
msExchEDBFile = D:\Exchange Database\Mailbox Database 1234567890.edb
msExchESEParamLogFilePath = D:\Exchange Database\Logs
msExchESEParamSystemPath = D:\Exchange Database\Logs
Open Exchange Management Console and MOUNT the Mailbox Database.
Ensure that your Exchange Server is working correctly before deleting the folders in the old database location.
